Greetings,
Just checking out Discovery's Rocket Challenge and thought I would throw out forming an IVU Rocket Team... perhaps develop enough rocketry to propose something like a Rocket Contest for defcon 12 or 13... not sure how many IVU ppl would be interested but I know I have played a lot with rockets (mostly estes models, and motors, kits).
We could have experimental payloads, such as wifi, other forms of wireless, gps, upper guidance fin control, etc...
This program deals with some nice bigger rocket scales... but we could start small. Let me know if you are interested either on this thread or via email: blackwave@irvineunderground.org _________________ -=BW=-

there used to be quite a few fields in irvine that were rocket-neutral but I think that we would have to do some research and find some fields that we could actually launch on without any issues... especially with the fire issues and any newly formed terrorist issues. I am sure all the fields I used to launch at are no longer feasible, also all the bases are shut down and may require further investigation to see if rocket clubs are still allowed there (they were at one time).
I think some fun focals would be to setup up a nice launch system that is computer controlled using a few relays a cheap computer and some wireless control (to halt, start countdowns, sequencing). I recall seeing some software out there, but haven't played with it in a while and not sure if it was open source... I'll look around. _________________ -=BW=-

Onboard computer equipment would be interesting too, Think we can get someone to volunteer their U1 on board? |

there are tons of readings we can take from some of the kits there are out there, onboard wireless video is always fun... of course once we start doing some serious design we can have rocket wars... <evil grin> _________________ -=BW=-

Now that is cool. Tonight, I just finished watching it then finding this thread. This brought back so many memories for me. As a teen, I used to shoot off my Estes rockets at the Salton Sea. Mmmmm. I remember all the fun I had. Please count me in to re-live some history as well as pass the hobby on to DaLittleMan.
As far as purchasing engines, I did hear something about that but I am sure the local hobby shop will know. _________________ - Who DaMan? -

the local hobby shops and even michaels craft store, and toys r us still sells estes model rockets and motors...
alrighty i have put in a request for the IVU Rocket Team forum and those who want to be on it let me know, currently Tacitus, Daman and myself are on team.
Things that need to get done probably before the next meet Nov21 are:
1. Check with local laws (usually through rocket groups, sponsors, police department) with what the rocket tolerance is. I am sure we can find somewhere legal to launch/retrieve them. (nothing found in IPD's site via search: http://www.cityofirvine.org/search/default.asp )
2. Find a decent supplier of motors (as mentioned toy r us, michael's craft stores and a few hobby local hobby shops sell them)
3. Plan a day to get together to implement designs at a legal launch site, report, get readings and report back to group... <not sure if this is going to happen soon due to the holidays>

Homeland Security Act and Model Rocketry
The Homeland Security Act includes the "Safe Explosives Act" which has placed even more responsibility on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in an effort to keep explosives out of the hands of terrorists. As would be expected there are now more explosives regulations. However, some of the information that has been provided to and reported by the media has several issues confused. Visit http://www.atf.treas.gov/explarson/safexpact/modelrockets.htm to obtain accurate information with regard to the ATF and model rocketry. UPS, FedEx and other carriers continue to carry model rocket engines (model rocket motors that contain no more than 62.5 grams of propellant per device) that are properly packaged, marked, labeled and documented in accordance with the regulations of the U.S. Department of Transportation (49 CFR). The same is true with regard to the United States Postal Service for Toy Propellant Devices (Model Rocket Motors and Igniters that are pre-approved for mailing by the USPS) that contain no more than 30 grams of propellant per device.

I've located some info here about legal sites:

Rocketry Organization of California - http://www.rocstock.org/
"The Rocketry Organization of California (ROC) is a model and high-power rocketry club based primarily in Southern California."
These guys launch rockets that are fucking huge, all up in the desert about about 3 hours from here.

| On the Discovery show they mentioned needing to be licenced for the larger engines... is this a easy process? is it federal? state? private industry? |

its more like SCUBA than it is HAM....
most people wont sell you stuff unless you're certified...... but its not *illegal.
*most laws are against using the motors in the wrong places, not about possesion.
1/2 A - D is regular users.
E - G is recomended to have a decent ammount of experiance. also requires a certain launch area
H and higher requires super special places to laaunch, and most are run by rocket guys who wont let you fly unless you're certified higher.
we did all my medium stuff at mile square park. _________________ Just another IVU guy...... |
